Where to See Hydrangeas on Nantucket: When to Go and Why They’re So Iconic

June 17, 2025

One of the most picture-perfect parts of summer on Nantucket? The hydrangeas. Whether you’re strolling through ‘Sconset, heading to the beach, or just out for your morning coffee, you’re bound to come across a flurry of pastel blooms spilling over white picket fences and brightening up window boxes. Hydrangea season is one of the island’s most loved (and most photographed!) times of year, and if you’re planning a visit, it’s worth timing your trip to catch them in all their glory.

So when exactly should you come? Hydrangea season typically runs from late June through August, with July being the most spectacular month. By the Fourth of July, the island is in full bloom. You’ll see hydrangeas tucked into garden beds, hugging stone walls, and bursting with color in front of historic homes across the island. It’s one of the prettiest times to explore and for many of us, it’s peak Nantucket.

These hydrangeas are part of the island’s visual identity, offering a perfect contrast to our signature gray shingles and classic coastal architecture. The blooms here are especially striking thanks to Nantucket’s naturally acidic soil, which gives the flowers their signature saturated blue and violet tones. Paired with ocean breezes and a relaxed island vibe, they’re as much a part of summer as bike rides to the beach and ice cream at the Juice Bar.

If you’re hoping to catch some of the island’s most iconic hydrangea views, we’ve rounded up a few of our favorite places to see them:

‘Sconset

This charming village is known for its rose-covered cottages and bluff walk views, but don’t overlook its hydrangeas. Take a walk along Front Street for the famously known rose cottages, or wander under the ‘Sconset Bridge heading toward the beach, and you’ll find gorgeous blue blooms nestled into nearly every corner.

Lincoln Avenue

Just near the entrance to Steps Beach, Lincoln Avenue features one of the most beloved hydrangea displays on the island. In a good bloom year, it’s nothing short of breathtaking.

Downtown Nantucket

If you’re staying close to town, you don’t have to go far to find stunning blooms. Gardens, planters, and historic inns along the cobblestone streets are decked out with colorful hydrangeas and other seasonal flowers all summer long.

Old North Wharf

Originally built in the 18th century as part of Nantucket’s bustling commercial harbor, Old North Wharf is now one of the island’s most iconic and scenic areas. The historic cottages that line the boardwalk, once home to sea captains and merchants, are now framed by blooming summer gardens and classic Nantucket hydrangeas—making it a favorite spot for history lovers and photographers alike.

Madaket

While hydrangeas are less concentrated here than in town, you’ll still spot them in cottage gardens and along sandy paths leading to the beach—especially around private homes near the shore. It’s a quieter stretch of the island, perfect for a peaceful walk or a sunset moment surrounded by coastal blooms.

The Bluff Walk

If you’re up for a longer stroll, the Bluff Walk in ‘Sconset offers sweeping ocean views paired with front-row access to some of the island’s prettiest private gardens.

From classic blue varieties to deep purples and soft pinks, Nantucket’s hydrangeas are part of what makes a summer here so unforgettable. If you’re lucky enough to be on island during peak season, take the time to wander, snap a few photos, and soak it all in—because like all things Nantucket, it’s beautiful, fleeting, and totally worth the trip.
